MedShare to Honor athenahealth with Community Impact Award

MedShare is proud to recognize athenahealth as the recipient of its Community Impact Award, honoring an organization whose sustained partnership and hands-on engagement have significantly advanced MedShare’s mission to help improve health access and save lives in communities around the world.

Since 2017, athenahealth has been a dedicated partner in MedShare’s efforts to expand healthcare access and promote health equity. Through both corporate leadership and active employee engagement, the company has demonstrated a deep and ongoing commitment to improving the health and well-being of vulnerable populations globally.

A cornerstone of this partnership is the extraordinary service of athenahealth employees—known affectionately as athenistas—who have assembled more than 17,000 Clean Birthing Kits (CBKs) through volunteer initiatives with MedShare. These kits contain essential sterile supplies used during childbirth in underserved and low-resource healthcare settings, where births are more likely to occur outside of a healthcare facility.

Clean Birthing Kits play a critical role in reducing maternal and newborn mortality in many parts of the world where childbirth still occurs without access to sterile gloves, clean cutting instruments, or basic infection prevention supplies. The absence of these simple yet lifesaving tools significantly increases the risk of infection, complications, and preventable deaths for both mothers and infants. By assembling these kits, athenahealth employees are helping ensure safer deliveries and better health outcomes for families and communities worldwide.

In addition to assembling birthing kits, athenistas have volunteered at MedShare’s headquarters and distribution facility in Decatur, Georgia, where they help sort and prepare donated medical supplies and equipment for shipment to charitable healthcare providers. These efforts play a vital role in MedShare’s ability to efficiently process and distribute lifesaving resources to underserved health systems both domestically and internationally.

athenahealth’s partnership extends beyond financial and logistical support. The company has made employee service a central component of its collaboration with MedShare, creating meaningful opportunities for team members to directly contribute to global health impact. Through this engagement, athenahealth has fostered a culture of service that connects its workforce to MedShare’s mission while delivering tangible, lifesaving resources to communities in need.

“athenahealth has been an extraordinary partner in advancing our mission,” said Stacey Koehnke, CEO of MedShare. “Their commitment to engaging employees in hands-on service reflects a powerful understanding that improving access to healthcare requires both resources and people. The dedication of these wonderful athenistas has helped save lives, strengthen healthcare systems, and expand access to safe childbirth around the world.”

MedShare will present the Community Impact Award to athenahealth at its inaugural HumanKind celebration on May 6, 2026, at the Trees Atlanta Kendeda TreeHouse. The event will honor partners, supporters, and organizations that help make MedShare’s lifesaving work possible.

As the need for maternal health resources and equitable healthcare access continues to grow worldwide, partnerships like athenahealth’s demonstrate how corporate leadership and employee engagement can drive meaningful, lasting change.
