MedShare International has a dual mission of providing humanitarian medical aid to economically developing countries and of helping to improve our local environment. Since 1998, MedShare has shipped over $25 million worth of surplus medical supplies and equipment to hospitals and clinics in 89 countries. The organization has also saved 540,000 cubic feet of landfill space.

Clinton Foundation Partnership

Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World is the title of President Bill Clinton's latest book, and it speaks exactly to the innovative approach MedShare is taking to balance the supply and demand of medical supplies around the world. In fact, MedShare is recognized in the book, in the chapter entitled "Giving Things."

The Clinton Foundation is collaborating with MedShare to improve healthcare in Ethiopia. In conjunction with the Ethiopian government, the Clinton Foundation has created an initiative with the goal to create a national network of 3000 small clinics that will be within reach of all of Ethiopia's citizens, including those in outlying areas who currently have little or no access to healthcare. The impact for poor, rural populations will be life-changing, as more than 100 of these clinics are scheduled to be supported by the Clinton Initiative this year.

Where does MedShare fit into all of this? Nell Diallo, MedShare's Executive Director—Atlanta, learned about the dynamic initiative through Ethiopia's Minister of Health. She then approached the Clinton Foundation with an offer to help. Because one of the most immediate needs to make the process a success will be the acquisition of medical supplies and equipment at each one of the clinics, she saw an obvious opportunity to offer support. MedShare's mission—collecting, organizing, and shipping surplus medical supplies and equipment from the U.S. to hospitals and clinics in developing countries—is a perfect fit.

"We eagerly became involved in assisting this supremely important initiative that will surely be replicated in other parts of the economically developing world," said Nell Diallo. "It will provide decentralized services to the underserved populations in Ethiopia, giving them unprecedented access to improved healthcare."

This year's goal is for MedShare to send three containers to Ethiopia—each with all the supplies and equipment necessary to provide turn-key operations for two clinics. In collaboration with the Clinton Foundation and other humanitarian aid organizations, MedShare International is changing the world.
