In preparing for a six-week medical program in Uganda, a medical team from Medicine for Humanity and the Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California in Los Angeles(UCLA) was in great need of medical supplies to assist them in their medical work. They abruptly turned to MedShare for help.
“We performed over 120 gynecological procedures that greatly improved the lives of women in Uganda that have limited access to healthcare. We would never have been able to make this kind of impact without the generosity of MedShare,” said Dr. Amy Stenson from UCLA.
The medical team, consisting of medical students, residents, nurses and physicians, embarked on a six-week program with Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Uganda. The purpose of the program was to train medical professionals at MUST and to assist in some key areas of women’s health in Uganda.
To meet their immediate need for medical supplies, MedShare donated a large amounts of sutures, surgical gloves and other necessary medical items that were crucial to the success of the program. The program focused on complex gynecologic surgery such as, obstetric fistula repair, prolapsed repair and gynecologic oncology. It also addressed cervical cancer screening, maternal mortality prevention and public health access.
Along with the 120 gynecological surgeries, the supplies were used to treat over 25 cancer cases and removed over 15 uterine and ovarian tumors. They performed an astounding 300 Caesarean sections with the donated supplies, and treated six pediatric cases, including caring for an abandoned baby during a weekend when the pediatric intensive care unit was over capacity.
“Improving healthcare in areas of great need is at the heart of MedShare’s mission,” says A.B. Short, CEO & Co-Founder. “Thanks to the donors who support our Western Region and the volunteers and staff led by Executive Director Chuck Haupt, MedShare is able to support the vital work of the UCLA medical team and many others to improve women’s health in Uganda and throughout the world.”
