Dr. Jonathan Nwiloh is not your average cardiovascular surgeon in Atlanta. He is also dedicated to saving lives and advancing medicine in his home country of Nigeria.

Several times per year, Dr. Nwiloh and a team of Atlanta medical professionals travel to Nigeria to perform free open heart surgeries and also to train and educate medical staff about cardiovascular medicine. On their trips, they carry all their own equipment and supplies, so to assist his efforts, he often collects medical product from the MedShare Med Team Store.

During their two week trips, the teams will perform around 10-15 open heart surgery cases. The majority of his surgeries are performed on children and teenagers suffering from congenital heart disease.

“Congenital heart disease is something that is normally found and treated at infancy, but Nigeria has no open heart surgery program and limited ways to treat this condition. That is why many of our surgery cases are teenagers and young adults,” said Dr. Nwiloh.

Dr. Nwiloh’s ultimate goal is to see Nigeria establish an open heart surgery program, and he believes they are very close to achieving that goal. In March, Dr. Nwiloh, along with the Ministry of Health, partnered with MedShare to ship a container of medical supplies and equipment to the Anambra State Ministry of Health in Nigeria. In addition to basic medical supplies, the shipment included items like an anesthesia machine, blood glucose monitors and open heart surgical packs. Three more shipments are planned by the end of May.

MedShare welcomed the Health Commissioner from Anambra State, Professor Amobi Lilika on Monday, March 30 to tour the facility, go over the logistics of the shipments and review the medical equipment being shipped.

We are excited to work with Dr. Nwiloh and the Anambra State Ministry of Health in seeing how these supplies and equipment are going to advance healthcare in Nigeria.
