A doctor and patient at CURE Kabul Hospital.
MedShare has developed an excellent system for collecting, organizing, and distributing surplus medical supplies and equipment. To ensure these supplies safely reach those most in need, MedShare has formed partnerships with corporations and other non-profits that not only have operations in MedShare’s recipient countries, but also have a vested interest in improving the quality of healthcare in those same nations. One such partnership is with CURE International, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the medical needs of disabled children and their families at specialty teaching hospitals in the economically developing world. CURE specializes in the orthopedic rehabilitation of children with disabilities, performing life-changing operations on children with conditions such as hydrocephalus, a brain condition, and clubfeet, a birth defect.
In 2005, CURE established a 115-bed hospital and family clinic in Kabul, Afghanistan. This hospital treats close to 100,000 patients each year and its staff performs over 400 surgeries in three fully-equipped operating rooms. In order to obtain the enormous amount of supplies and equipment needed to outfit a hospital this size, CURE turned to MedShare. Earlier this year, CURE Kabul submitted a list of needs to MedShare, whose staff prepared and shipped a 40-foot container. According to David Bell, CURE’s Procurement and Inventory Manager, “We like working with MedShare because they often go that extra mile.” For instance, when oxygen concentrators were donated for the Kabul facility, MedShare’s biomedical engineer inspected each one to ensure proper functionality. Additionally, MedShare provides shipping and logistics services for supplies that CURE purchases elsewhere to help save costs and maximize efficiency.
MedShare and CURE are highly compatible in their missions, operations, and needs. As the MedShare community celebrates the holiday season, we also give thanks to the partners and individuals who allow MedShare to help so many in need around the world.
