Rwinkwavu Hospital will soon be expanded
to include a second operating theater.
Hospital operating rooms in Rwanda that are now in various stages of development will soon be buzzing with activity, thanks to a recent collaboration between MedShare and Partners in Health.
Partners in Health, a non-profit organization co-founded in 1987 by a group of individuals including health and human rights activist Paul Farmer, has had a presence in Rwanda since the spring of 2005. Its goal is straightforward and has proven to be effective: partner with poor communities to combat disease and poverty. Linda Schejola of the Carlo and Micol Schejola Foundation, a supporter of both MedShare and Partners in Health, made the connection between the two organizations and offered to sponsor the shipment of two 40-foot containers of medical supplies and equipment to Rwanda.
The first container, which left MedShare on June 16, will provide the equipment necessary to set up operating rooms at three different hospitals: Rwinkwavu Hospital in Kayonza District, Kirehe Hospital in Kirehe District, and Butaro Hospital in Burera District. Items such as anesthesia machines, patient monitors and hydraulic stretchers will allow medical personnel to operate in safer, more dependable conditions and perform surgeries which would otherwise be unthinkable.
The most recent shipment left MedShare on August 13, and contained items such as warming lamps, electrosurgical units and defibrillators (which will be added to crash carts for resuscitation). This biomedical equipment will have an immeasurable effect on the lives of the surrounding population. According to Partners in Health, these three hospitals serve hundreds of thousands of people.

Patients in Rwanda will benefit from
expanded services from Partners in Health.
Because MedShare acts as a supply chain, giving organizations and individuals the tools they need to improve healthcare all over the world, collaborations like the one with Partners in Health are vital to MedShare’s mission. As we focus our efforts to adequately equip hospitals and medical professionals, we also applaud the life-saving efforts of service providers on the ground.
