MedShare Provides Medical Aid to Touba, Senegal; Reaches Out to the Muslim World
Desperately Needed Medical Supplies to Benefit the Holy City of Touba
ATLANTA – MedShare International, an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization that collects and recycles surplus medical supplies and equipment for distribution to healthcare groups in economically depressed countries, today sent a 40-foot medical container to Senegal in West Africa.
Since its 1998 inception, MedShare has delivered more than 188 container shipments of medical supplies and equipment to the economically deprived world. This shipment marks MedShare’s first medical donation to a Muslim community. MedShare is a nonsectarian organization, although many of its partners are faith-based. MedShare’s programs serve healthcare facilities in developing countries, regardless of religious or political affiliations, which provide medical care to the needy.
Approximately $130,000 worth of medical supplies and equipment will benefit Hospital Matlaboul Fawzayni, affiliated with the Foundation Khadimou Rassoul. The Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose main goal is to provide logistic, financial and technical assistance to Al Azar Institute in the propagation of Islamic culture. Hospital Matlaboul Fawzayni is a public facility located in the Holy City of Touba, 120 miles south of the capital Dakar. The hospital is responsible for serving a population of 1.5 million yet it is under-equipped and under-supplied. MedShare’s donation includes hospital beds, walkers, blood collection sets, maternity kits, thermometers, and needles among other items. MedShare only donates supplies and equipment that are requested by the recipient, ensuring that physicians and hospitals get what they really need to treat patients and save lives.
“Perhaps now more than ever it is important to strengthen good will and understanding,” said AB Short, MedShare’s Chief Executive Officer. “MedShare is proud to forge partnerships with the humanitarian community in the Muslim world and all faith groups to improve the health of those in need.”
Senegal is situated in Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania. The Senegal population is plagued by infectious disease, including: typhoid fever, dengue fever, malaria and yellow fever which is exacerbated by poverty. The unemployment rate is 48%; those people living below the poverty line is 54%. MedShare’s medical donation will make a tremendous difference in the lives of the poor.
