MedSharing a World of Art Auction is a Big Success!
On September 16th, 2006, MedShare hosted its first annual art auction fundraiser, an event titled MedSharing a World of Art.
The proceeds from this event will be used to support the shipment of medical supplies to underserved populations in the economically developing world. MedShare's dual mission includes the local environmental goal of intercepting supplies before they enter landfills and incinerators, and the global public health objective of providing medical supplies to those who need them most all over the world. MedShare's supporters believe strongly in the urgency of this work. The funds raised from this event will be used for MedShare container shipments to communities in Africa, where the supplies and equipment will improve healthcare and quality of life for countless individuals.
The art auction was a resounding success. Community activists Angele Hawkins and Maryann Toub served as event co-chairs. Dell Pearce, a professional development consultant, guided the auction committee as the event planner. With help from innumerable other volunteers and MedShare staff, they made it an evening to remember. "This auction gave MedShare supporters from all walks of life an opportunity to meet in person and discuss our common interest in improving healthcare and the environment worldwide," said MedShare CEO and co-founder AB Short.
Over one hundred-fifty guests attended, including volunteers, board members, community and corporate partners, and new friends of MedShare. The sort room was transformed into an international art bazaar. Volunteer Program Manager Juli Gribus-Powers said, "Our regular sorting volunteers barely recognized it!" Visitors mingled, browsed, and took self-tours of the warehouse facility. Delicious African cuisine was provided by Sheba Foods Catering Services.
Crafts and works of art made by local and international artists were provided by many friends of MedShare. Nell Diallo, MedShare’s Managing Director, managed the auction and solicited participation from renowned galleries, Gems of Africa, Massai Arts and the William Tolliver Collection. Ms. Diallo also secured the donation of artwork from His Excellency Malian President Touré, and a signed limited edition memoir from the former President of the United States, The Honorable Jimmy Carter and current Atlanta Mayor, The Honorable Shirley Franklin.
Throughout the evening, auction attendees bid on items in a silent auction and made purchases in an ad hoc marketplace that featured handmade African jewelry. The most dramatic part of the evening was the live auction. Master auctioneer Robert Herbertson of Regency Fine Art roused the crowd to bid ever higher on the fine pieces of art that were up for sale.
MedShare extends it heartfelt gratitude to all who, in helping with the organization and execution of the event, made the Art Auction possible, and thanks also to those in attendance who contributed to its ultimate success.
