Georgia glimpses
Georgia Magazine - Decatur-based MedShare International, a nonprofit group that provides humanitarian medical aid to economically developing countries while helping improve the environment, recently received a $250,000 grant from the Kimberly-Clark Corp. to send up to $7.5 million worth of medical supplies and equipment to Latin American countries in need.
MedShare International collects surplus medical supplies from 16 metro Atlanta hospitals, which would have been discarded into local landfills, and distributes the items to hospitals in developing countries, with the help of sponsors. They also provide second-phase relief when disasters such as Hurricane Katrina occur, sending supplies to local agencies and hospitals in the affected areas.
