SAN LEANDRO, Calif.— MedShare, a nonprofit organization in San Leandro, invites Bay Area residents to join in the “Super Sort” Volunteer Day on Monday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Volunteers will sort surplus medical supplies that have been donated by local hospitals and manufacturers, in preparation to redistribute the supplies to developing countries across the globe.

“MedShare has had a wonderful response from volunteers throughout the Bay Area since we opened here four months ago and we want to keep the momentum going with our ‘Super Sort’ Volunteer Day.  We normally process about 6-8 pallets of supplies in a day, and are hoping to process as many 25-50 pallets on Monday,” said Terry Monday, the volunteer program manager at MedShare.

Additionally, MedShare volunteers are asked to bring personal hygiene products, such as hotel-sized shampoo, soap and toothpaste. The products will be donated to the Davis Street Family Resource Center, who will then distribute them to local residents in need.

The national holiday honoring King has been designated a National Day of Community Service grounded in King’s teachings of nonviolence and social justice.  The aim is to make the holiday a day ON where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to improve the lives of others through volunteer service.

MedShare is located at 2937 Alvarado St., San Leandro, just off the I-880 Freeway at Marina Blvd. East. Volunteers should contact Terry Monday at tmonday@medshare.org to register for the event or for further information.
