MedShare Wins at Atlanta Business Chronicle's Environmental Awards

March 29, 2010

ATLANTA, Ga. (March 26, 2010) – On Friday, March 26, MedShare was recognized as the Green Giving winner at the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Environmental Awards.

The purpose of the environmental awards is to highlight the companies and individuals working to conserve metro Atlanta’s natural resources, curb pollution, develop new products to serve our environment, support environmental projects and initiatives and spread the green word through marketing and education.

The Green Giving award presented to MedShare recognized a significant donation by a philanthropic or nonprofit organization to an outstanding environmental cause that has demonstrated a significant benefit to the environment. MedShare is a nonprofit organization that recovers surplus medical supplies from hospitals and medical companies, and redistributes them to those in need.

“It’s an honor to be named a winner at this year’s Atlanta Business Chronicle Environmental Awards. We are grateful to the hospitals and supply and equipment manufacturers, both here in Atlanta and across the nation, that participate in our medical surplus recycling program, which diverts thousands of pounds of surplus medical supplies from our landfills,” said A.B. Short, CEO & Co-Founder of MedShare.

Each week, MedShare collects an average 1,200 lbs. of unused, unexpired surplus medical supplies from participating hospitals in metro Atlanta. Those supplies are then sorted and packaged by community volunteers, and shipped to needy hospitals in developing countries.

In MedShare’s 10 years of service, it has shipped 550 forty-foot containers of recovered medical supplies and equipment to 80 countries. This accounts for over 1 million cubic feet of landfill space saved.
