Tuesday, February 16, MedShare sent a 40-foot container of requested medical supplies and equipment to Indonesia to assist in relief efforts after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck on Sept. 30, 2009.
“A few months have passed since the earthquake, but reconstruction will continue for years to come. It was amazing to see the community work together as a collaborative force as a result of this tragic event. Through everyone’s commitment, the people of Padang will receive this much needed help,” said Tess Guerrero, Project Leader for Indonesia Catholic Community of Northern California.
The shipment will be sent to Yos Sudarso Hospital in Padang to help them rebuild after suffering damage by the earthquake. There are over 1,200 medical items being sent, such as surgical supplies and instruments, wheelchairs, an autoclave and vital signs monitor.
“MedShare was honored to work and celebrate with leaders from the Indonesia Catholic Community of Northern California, among others, on this important medical shipment to aid the rebuilding efforts in Indonesia resulting from the devastating earthquake last year,” said Chuck Haupt, Executive Director of MedShare Western Region.
On Tuesday, MedShare hosted a send-off ceremony to honor those involved in providing this needed medical aid shipment to the disaster-ridden area of Indonesia. In attendance was Mr. Asianto Sinambela, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia and leaders from the Indonesia Catholic Community of Northern California.
"On this occasion, I expressed my deepest gratitude and highest appreciation to all contributors and donators of the medical items sent to the earthquake affected people in Padang," said Asianto Sinambela, Consul General of Indonesian Consulate for Northern California.
The shipment of these needed medical items was a collaboration of efforts. Along with the Indonesia Catholic Community, Maersk provided the transportation from the Port of Oakland to the Port of Teluk Bayur. Maximus Card, Hamamatsu and Ross Graphics also helped with the sponsorship of the shipment.
