"MedShare is an inspiring organization that I take pride in partnering with. The leaders of MedShare are driven, smart and dedicated to their special cause. Their mission is clear, and they make it easy for people such as myself to take part in relief efforts for struggling countries such as Haiti."-Volunteer from MedShare Western Region

This month we celebrate our Western Region volunteer staff and volunteers. With the hard work of volunteer coordinators, Terry Monday and Tierney Haupt, MedShare Western Region was recognized at the The Volunteer Center’s 2010 Bay Area Volunteer Awards. We were honored with the Excellence in Nonprofit Volunteer Management Award for effectively engaging volunteers in MedShare’s meaningful work.

“I am incredibly proud that, through their inspired leadership, we have been selected as one of the premier nonprofits in the Bay Area,” said Chuck Haupt, Executive Director, MedShare Western Region.

Volunteers are a crucial part of MedShare’s operations, and we could not complete our mission without our dedicated volunteers. To show our appreciation, the Western Region held its annual volunteer appreciation event on May 1. The event included an international luncheon with foods from some of the countries we’ve shipped medical supplies to, including Vietnam, El Salvador, Ethiopia and Haiti.

There was also an award ceremony to recognize those who have served 50 hours or more in the past 12 months.  John Morton received the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award for donating more than 500 hours of volunteer service.  JoAnna Hansen-Morton and Susan Dyer of San Leandro received Silver Presidential Service Awards for more than 250 hours of service to MedShare. An additional 11 volunteers received Bronze Presidential Service Awards for volunteering more than 100 hours. MedShare also awarded California’s Governor and First Lady Service Awards to 32 volunteers that have volunteered 50 hours or more.

Since beginning operations in October 2008, MedShare Western Region has had 3,355 volunteers donate almost 20,000 hours to sort and pack over 180 tons of recovered medical supplies to be sent to those in need.
